Posture
Picture what you believe to be an old person. How are they sitting or standing? Most will picture them slumped over. Stooped. Back and neck arched over, their face looking toward their feet. Like an old wilted flower.
Now you. Hunch over. Stoop. Let your shoulders pull forward and now you look instantly older too. The more you look like people’s stereotype of old people, the more they will think of you as “old”.
But just as we can make ourself look older instantly, we can reverse it too!
How do we fix that? Simple. Stand up straight and tall. Imagine there is a string attached to the top of your head and someone is pulling it up, pulling you up. Shoulders back. Head and eyes facing forward. Use a mirror to see how you look.
Practice posture by standing against a wall. Heels touching the wall. Butt touching. Shoulders touching. Head touching. The first time you try this, you might be surprised how far off your posture is. Especially since we’ve all been drawn to screens. Computers and cell phones.

Eyes
Eyes convey energy and attention. When they are open wide, looking at the people around you, observing the actions in the moment, you seem more alert. Sleepy looking eyes convey tireness. Lack of energy. Used up.
While we often can’t control drooping lids above, or bags under, we can control our eye movements. They should be observant and open. As if eagerly awaiting, “What’s next?” with a childlike wonder.
Gestures
One hallmark of a good communicator is bold hand gestures. Watch any popular speaker or celebrity on YouTube or TikTok and you will instantly notice that they gesture a lot. Big gestures. They reinforce points with powerful hand motions. Full-body moves to put emphasis on a point. Singers do this too.
Just as with eyes, gestures convey energy. And who has energy? Young people do. Move your body faster and gesture big. And with power. The energy that brings to your interactions will instantly make you appear 10 years younger.
Smile
Smiles instantly make you more attractive. No one wants to hang out with a sourpuss. Smiles bring additional life to your eyes. Energy to your face. Science has shown you can even improve your mental mood and energy levels just by smiling. Smiling also shows others that you are present, observant, and in the moment. Whereas “old people” often appear sullen, consumed by their personal challenges or pains.
Smiling is a simple way to add energy to your face while subtracting years.
