Feeling stressed at home, or at work, but you’re not sure why?
It could be a direct result of the environment.
Several studies have been done, including right here in the USA, that explored the relationship between the home environment and health, wealth, and happiness.
One study specifically looked at how different factors within the home environment, such as air quality, lighting, and clutter, affected the well-being of the residents.
Not surprisingly, homes with poor air quality, insufficient lighting, and excessive clutter were linked to negative health outcomes, such as increased stress, decreased cognitive function, and decreased overall life satisfaction.
Conversely, the study found that a clean, well-lit, and well-ventilated home with good air quality was associated with better physical and mental health, as well as increased life satisfaction, and overall happiness.
Kind of a “What you see, is what you get” situation.
If you see chaos everyday, at home or at work, you’ll tend to feel your life is chaotic.
But, if what you’re normally seeing are order and organization, you’ll feel your life is under control, and hence, feel less stressed.
By extension, however you decorate your home or office, its decor, the colors, the openness, will subconsciously influence how you feel.
Dark colors could make you gloomy. Light colors more awake. Cool colors like blues and green more calm. Bold colors like orange and red, more bold, aggressive perhaps. Yellow makes people more cheery. Like sunshine.
Paintings hung, heirlooms displayed, knick-knacks scattered all about contribute to your temperament. Your mood. Your personality.
So, if you’re feeling a bit out of sorts, but don’t know why, perhaps a change of environment is in order. Choose colors and pieces to suit the mood you would like to have. Change your environment to help you change.
